Puerta del Sol.
Statue of Mariblanca.
The statue on display at Puerta del Sol is a copy of the original, and was installed on 26 March 1985. The original statue was imported from Italy in 1625, and between 1630 and 1838 it crowned the Mariblanca fountain, in Puerta del Sol itself. Later, after the fountain disappeared, it was installed in various places in Madrid, until in 1969 it was moved to Paseo de Recoletos, where it was repeatedly vandalized during the 1980s. Currently, restored, it is placed in the hall of the Casa de la Villa de Madrid, the former City Hall. According to the inscription that appears on the column (photo above), below the relief with the city's coat of arms, it is the goddess Venus, although some chroniclers have identified it with Diana or as an allegory of Faith: it is known as Mariblanca because of the color of the marble in which it was sculpted. There is a second copy of the original sculpture on display at the History Museum of Madrid.
