RĪGA, Latvia
Rātslaukums
Monument to Roland (Frankish military leader under
Charlemagne, died in 778), Riga’s patron, in front of the Brotherhood of
Blackheads (Melngalvju brālības). The sculpture was made by Edvins Krumiņš (Ugale,
1959) to replace the one of 1897 designed by Wilhelm Neumann and carved by
August Volz, which was pulled down by the Soviets in 1945. The new monument was
unveiled in May 2000.
