The place of the Jean Pesynhof, a hospice founded in
1609 by Jean Pesyn (Lille or Tourcoing, France, 1612 - Leiden, 1666) and his
wife Marie le Mahieu (1578-1650) in the shelter of a group of English religious
(known as "Pilgrim Fathers") who had settled in Leiden
and then emigrated to America. The old building was replaced by a
new house built in 1683. In the plaque above the door, it is written:
