Caritasbrønden, the
oldest fountain of the city, built in 1608 in Renaissance style. At the top is
the allegorical sculpture of Charity, symbolized by a pregnant mother with her
children. The figure, originally made of wood by the German sculptor of the
17th century Statius Otto, was reproduced in bronze to put on this fountain.
The woman throws water on her breasts, and a child urinated in the fountain’s
water. In 1890 were placed golden dolphins around the figure, whose nakedness
was considered obscene.
