SPLIT, Croatia
One of the granite sphinxes 3500-years-old,
originating in Egypt, located in the Palace of Diocletian (Dioklecijanova palača), built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian
(244-311) in the late fourth century AD for personal use and housing military
garrison. In November 1979, UNESCO adopted a proposal that the historic city of
Split, built around the palace should be included in the register of World
Cultural Heritage.
