The first wooden church was built around 1700 in the place where was the oldest church of Mērsrags (1591). In 1743 the temple was expanded, and in 1809 the tower was added. The church was rebuilt largely in 1896 and was badly damaged during World War II; later had to be subjected to major restoration work.
